Information
This course is designed to provide installers with the skills and knowledge required to select the most appropriate solar system for a building based on the client’s needs and to install and maintain any of the common systems in the UK safely and efficiently.
It has been designed with the intention of meeting the requirement of the National Occupational Standards and industry working groups.
The course is a requirement of the minimum technical competency (MTC) document for solar installers and the certificate is recognised by all bodies offering routes to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) as evidence of suitable training.
Areas covered:
- Introduction to solar heating
- Service and maintenance
- Solar collectors
- Hot water storage and key installation issues
- Preparing to install a solar water heating system
- Fitting solar collectors
- Plumbing layout and design of solar water heating systems
- Control and power requirements
- System commissioning and handover to client
Entry requirements
Learners must have:
- A N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing certificate; or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) certificate; or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) certificate; or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services certificate; or
- N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance certificate; or
- Equivalent historical qualifications; or
- A minimum 3 years demonstrable relevant experience
Learners must also have Water Regulations/Water Byelaws, Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating and Unvented Hot Water if not included in the qualifications above.

- A declaration of the category for the individual making the application
- First-time applicants will also be required to provide an acceptable form of photographic identification e.g. a passport or driving licence
