International Women’s Day 2026: A conversation with new OEA Managing Director Molly Alsworth
05 Mar 2026
Congratulations Molly! Tell us about your career journey so far.
“I started working with OEA in 2019 as a Business Administrator. With a background in management, I continued to progress in my role and became Office Manager in May 2023. Since then, I’ve continued to develop my skills and take on more responsibility.
“When Dave [Bendell, founder of OEA] announced his retirement, I expressed an interest in the Managing Director role and was successful. I’m now looking forward to this next chapter for both myself and OEA—something I’ve been working toward for a long time in my career.”
Are there any women who have inspired or supported you throughout your career?
“I’m continually inspired by the women entering trades and technical training today. We have several female apprentices at OEA, and I love speaking to them throughout the week - encouraging them and hearing about how well they’re doing. Supporting and developing them has become one of the most meaningful parts of my leadership journey.”
Which experiences in your career have shaped your leadership style the most?
“It would be leading a diverse team of trainers and support staff. It’s taught me the importance of collaboration, listening to experienced professionals, valuing frontline insight, and fostering a culture where people feel genuine ownership of their work.
What is your vision for OEA, and what excites you most about the future?
“I want to see us strengthen our position as a true centre of excellence—defined not just by qualifications, but by the confidence, professionalism, and capability of the people we develop.
“My aim is for OEA to set the benchmark in plumbing and gas training, with uncompromising standards, innovative teaching, and learners who leave both technically skilled and industry‑ready.
Achieving this means continuing to modernise our facilities, investing in our trainers, and ensuring our curriculum keeps pace with new technologies and evolving industry requirements.”
What advice would you give to women who aspire to step into roles in a male‑dominated sector like practical trades?
“If I were to share any advice with women looking to take the next step in their careers, it would be to go for it! Show everyone how hard you can work and how well you can do.”
